Transfer Crazy (and it's not even January yet)

Silly season hasn't even kicked into gear yet, but that hasn't stopped Manchester City being linked with a ridiculous 34 players which are worth an eye watering £617.7m as of today (15/12/2011). What's laughable is you will actually see people commenting on these rumours as though a) they're actually true and b) City are actually wanting to buy them all. I do pity these sad individuals, almost as much as I pity the journalists (and I use that term loosely) who make up the majority of them in the first place.

Looking for maximum points for Christmas, but what about the January Sales?

January is fast approaching and although the rumour mill hasn't quite cranked into gear just yet you can be sure that clubs will have been looking at potential targets for a while now. Do City need to get the wallet out in January?

I think we all know that whether they do or not will largely depend on who leaves and for how much as City reign in the spending done over the last few seasons. Mancini has stated as much several times in press conferences in recent weeks.

There are still a few players who aren't on loan at the moment who aren't really part of Mancini's plans for the Club. Top of that list are Tevez and Bridge. One refuses to even acknowledge he has a contract and wants to leave, the other seemingly just wants to pick up his paycheck and go shopping.


We'll look at each position in the squad and try to assess where City may want to strengthen when the transfer window opens and a brief thought about options at the end of the season. This is all just my opinion of course so feel free to leave comments with your own thoughts.

Goalkeeper

• Joe Hart
• Costel Pantilimon
• Stuart Taylor

Questions were asked when City announced the season long loan of Pantilimon as we knew very little about him other than what we had seen in the Europa League last season. I do believe that he is a good stand-in keeper if the unthinkable should happen to Joe Hart. I really can't see any ins or outs happening with this position in January.

With Pantilimon only being on loan City will need to look at getting in another keeper capable of covering. Maybe that player will be Pantilimon, he's certainly got the right attitude and is about as good a keeper as you'll get who will stay at a club knowing he is likely to be 2nd choice for most of the season.

Right-Back

• Micah Richards
• Pablo Zabaleta
• Nedum Onuoha

Micah has made the RB position his own this season and is almost everyone's automatic first choice for the role.

Zaba has predominantly been used for European games this season and will no doubt now feature in the Europa League. Lets face it, he's not a bad deputy to have is he?

Nedum really isn't in any sort of favour with Mancini and if the right offer comes in it may be tempting to let him go. However, given the recent injury worries in the fullback positions which saw Zaba play in left-back against Arsenal I don't think he will be going until the summer.

Left-Back

• Gael Clichy
• Aleks Kolarov
• Wayne Bridge

Both Gael and Aleks have shared the left-back position this season, with Gael getting the more time between the two of them. Although it might not look it at times, Kolarov has stepped up his game from last season in both defensive and offensive duties. He is still better going forward than defending though.

Wayne Bridge, well, what do you say about this player... Turned down a move to Celtic in the summer because they couldn't match City's wages and now he is usually sat at home or seen swanning about town with his missus. Not bad work if you can get it. City will be desperate to get Bridge off the wage bill and pocket anything they can for him. I'll start the bidding at some lint and an old scrap of chewing gum rapper.

With Zabaleta's ability to play left-back should both Gael and Aleks get injured we wont be seeing anyone coming for this position.

Centre-Back

• Vincent Kompany
• Joleon Lescott
• Stefan Savic
• Kolo Toure
• Dedryk Boyata*

The centre-back pairing pretty much picks itself at the moment. Kompany and Lescott are one of the best defensive partnerships in the country. They provide a balance to the back line and both complement each other's ability.

Stefan Savic will take some time to get used to life in the Premier League and his performances so far have proved that. That being said, he has shown enough potential to suggest he can make it in England once he is settled.

I don't think many would have thought it 12 months ago but we may be seeing the back of Kolo come January. Rumours have circulated about PSG's interest in the Ivory Coast international and his recent interview with So Foot has not helped restore his image since his drugs ban ended. Although he privately denied ever saying what was reported, So Foot have declared they have a recording of the interview and will take legal action should Kolo publicly denounce it. Message to Kolo; If you want to stay, get your head down, get fit and zip it.

With the promising Dedryk Boyata coming back from loan at the end of the season, unless Kolo is sold in January, I doubt we will see any more defenders coming into the club.

Midfield (Holding/Box-to-Box)

The centre of midfield is pretty much covered in all honesty. Looking down that list of players you'd be a brave person to say we need yet another player who can play in the centre of the park.

Yaya Toure will be missing for a few weeks in January but even so, I don't think that warrants going out and spending anything on a 'replacement' as I have seen some say. Ok Hargreaves will probably never be fit enough to put in back to back games, and Razak is still developing as a player but that still leaves Barry, Milner and De Jong.

Mancini will have to rotate these 3 and include Hargreaves and Razak where possible to keep everyone 100% through January and part of February.

Midfield (Attacking)

• David Silva
• Samir Nasri
• Adam Johnson
• Vladimir Weiss*

This is the position that City really need to be careful with. David Silva has become such an influential player that it is difficult to replace him should he have to miss games. Samir Nasri offers a lot of creativity although he has yet to really find his feet in the squad.

The real area City lack is options with wide men. Mancini is a great admirer of Adam Johnson but it is clear he still has much of his game to develop. Johnson is also City's only dedicated winger. Milner can and has played out wide but he isn't a winger.

A lot depends on what Mancini really thinks about Vladimir Weiss and whether he feels the Slovakian has enough talent to step up to the plate next season after his loan spell in Spain. I'm undecided about Weiss, he has obvious ability but lacks consistency. He could be the answer to City's lack of wingers but it's 50/50 as to whether Mancini trusts him enough not to bring in another wide man in January.

City do have a number of very talented young players coming through the ranks who fit into the attacking mid and winger roles. Juan Roman and Denis Suarez are both technically gifted young Spaniards and Alex Henshall Jeremy Helan and Albert Ruznak are all pacey wide-men.

All 5 have huge potential and if Mancini feels he needs another winger come January I hope he doesn't pick up one that's so young that it would hamper the chances of these young men in the future.

Forward

• Sergio Aguero
• Edin Dzeko
• Mario Balotelli
• Alex Tchuimeni-Nimely*
• John Guidetti*
• Luca Scapuzzi*

As with the centre of midfield, City have enough options at the front to be able to leave it as it is. Given the options in positions behind the main striker only a long term injury to 2 of the players before the end of January would have City looking to bring in cover.

I've not included Tevez in the list for quite obvious reasons, he clearly doesn't want to play for City and will do as he damn well pleases. That situation has been done to death and the Club will sort that out as they see fit.

The 3 other strikers named on the list are players with the potential to step into a 4th striker spot next season. It'll be a 3-way fight between them, although none of them will have to be included in the 25 man squad due to their ages so they may have another season to prove their worth before Mancini makes a decision on them.

There are a lot of players out on loan that I haven't included. This is basically because I don't think any of them have a future at  anymore, which is unfortunate for some of the younger players as if the club was in the same place it was 4 years ago they would likely be breaking into the first team quite easily.

All in all, when it comes to January, I really don't think we actually need to bring any players in (on loan or bought) for the majority of positions unless certain players end up with long term injuries or are sold on. If Kolo leaves, expect another defender to come in. If the midfield (holding or attacking) is hit with any long term injuries expect a loan signing.

I have seen it mentioned several times recently and no disrespect to anyone who has considered it, but the idea that City will actually go out and buy a player(s) to cover either or both Kolo and Yaya while they're on international duty is more than a little silly. It's makes absolutely no sens,e football or business-wise, what so ever.

You wouldn't expect any other manager to go out and buy a permanent replacement for a player who was out for 4-5 weeks with injury, so why would Mancini buy replacements for players off on international duty for the same length of time? As mentioned, the only way Mancini will by a replacement for Kolo is if he's leaving the club, not because he's on international duty. The same applies for Yaya.

There is a possibility that Mancini will look for another winger just so he has a player other than AJ to choose from but I can't see any more being done until the summer.

Don't be fooled by all the transfer rumours. This time 12 months ago their were around 30 players linked with moves to City and Mancini only opted to buy Edin Dzeko due to having only 2 strikers who were deemed good enough at the time.

End of an era for Shauny

Transfer deadline day (31/08/2011) saw Shaun Wright-Phillips leave Manchester City for Queens Park Rangers. A move that was almost as inevitable as it was difficult to see.

Shaun is, at this moment in time, the most successful graduate of City's Academy having featured in 30 games for England to date. He has played 181 times for City scoring 31times, and some of those have been memorable ones. Sweep was also named Young Player of the Year 4 times in a row between 2000-2003; Not bad for a player who was deemed too small to make it by Nottingham Forest who released him in 1996.

His move to Chelsea in 2005 upset and angered fans as they felt his head had been turned by the promise of a big money move. They felt let down on a big scale, but due to the financial state the club was in at the time £21m was simply too good to turn down.

Despite winning all 3 domestic competitions, Shaun was never a nailed on starter for Chelsea and eventually moved back to City for £9m in 2008, but since Sheikh Mansour took over the club Shaun once again found himself struggling to get a regular spot in the first team.

Shauny (in my opinion) is too good to be sat on the bench, but unfortunately just wasn't in Mancini's thinking for the squad. His transfer to QPR will give him a chance of regular 1st team football once again and also the opportunity to break back into the England squad. Hopefully he can do both.

Sky Sports News interviewed Wright-Phillips after his transfer to QPR and when asked about his feelings for City fans a sombre Shaun stated; "There will always be a blue spot in my heart."

I'm sure I speak for the majority of City fans when I wish him good luck at QPR and you will always be welcome in Manchester.

Boyata goes on loan to Bolton

20 year old Belgian defender Dedryck Boyata has joined Bolton Wanderers on a season-long-loan. I've said before that Bolton is a great place for young players to go on loan, mainly due to Owen Coyle who seems to have a knack of getting the best out of them and helping them develop.

With the possibility of losing Gary Cahill before the transfer window closes Boyata would bolster the Bolton back line, and Owen Coyle certainly rates the versatile defender;

"To bring in a player of Dedryck's age and quality is something, as we have shown before, we like to do.

"He is a tremendous addition. His versatility means that he can operate at centre-half and full-back."
We have already seen Wilshere and Sturridge benefit from spending time under the management of Coyle and this is something Dedryck hasn't failed to notice.

"I'm really looking forward to working with the manager." He says; "I have seen how he got the best out of Jack Wilshere and Daniel Sturridge."

Vladimir Weiss wants to leave Manchester.

It has been made public that Vladimir Weiss had completed his medical at Dynamo Kiev and that they were willing to pay the estimated £3m valuation for his services, but this was 2 days ago now and nothing seems to be happening. Reports today suggest that there may be other suitors interested in his signature and a growing number of City fans are becoming eager to see him walk through the exit.

The young Slovakian joined City full of promise and if he was at this level in the City team of 4 years ago he would probably be a first team regular. As it stands, Mancini feels he's not developed to the required level as we saw by the season-long loan at Rangers last season where he performed to a relatively average level.

Weiss began to get the disapproval of City fans when he got himself mixed up in the issue of sectarianism which blights the Scottish Premier League. He is obviously a very impressionable young man, but that can not excuse his actions after the SPL chiefs and hierarchy of each club had spoken against such things.

One of his tweets which caused quite a stir was; "All Celtic fans I hateeeeee youuuuu!"

He was also confronted by Police during and Old Firm clash as he held aloft a scarf displaying "We Are The People" to Celtic fans.

He further alienated City fans by boldly displaying his obvious affection for Rangers often displaying things like "Rangers forever" and "WATP" or just simply banging on about Rangers being "Champions again" on the day City rose to the top of the Premier League after beating Bolton 3-2 at the Reebok Stadium.

Through his twitter page he has shown a complete lack of respect for the club that developed his talent since he joined in 2006. And because of this, despite his potential and a promising pre-season, City fans are not too saddened by his potential sale.

I still stand by my opinion of if he got his head down and stepped his game up a little further he could have a great future in the game, although most likely wont be with City now. And no disrespect to Rangers, but with Vladimir so desperate to go back there on loan this season you have to ask the question; was he happy playing at a lower level and happy with the personal level he was at? That doesn't strike me as someone motivated to up their game and prove themselves on the biggest stage.

To top off his lack of dignity on Twitter, he then makes no bones about his feelings by saying;

"One thing is for sure, I want to leave Manchester."

He also appears to try to drum up a bit more interest in himself by declaring that several teams in England (notably Wigan) and Spain are "immensely interested" in signing him. Well  I don't see anyone beating the door down Vladi, is this just another case of you being a legend in your own mind?

Whatever the case, Vladi, I don't think too many people will miss you when you're gone.

City in for a little French Fancy as Samir Nasri deal is agreed.

Thankfully the will-he-wont-he media circus can now stop, as quite frankly it had got as tedious as the will-he-wont-he Tevez saga. City have agreed terms with Arsenal (and greedy, money grabbing agents) to bring the 24 year old to the Etihad Stadium.

I must admit though, it was a little entertaining for a short time with Arsene Wenger doing the holier than thou act because Mancini dared to answer a question about his interest in Nasri. This followed by Mancini giving a knowing smirk at each subsequent question on the subject.

Samir Nasri arrives from Arsenal for a fee of around £22m which for someone in the last year of their contract is probably a little steep. However what it does show is how much Mancini wanted him in the squad. And who can blame him as last season saw the attacking midfielder notch up 42 games, 13 goals, and 5 assists in all competitions with Arsenal.

He will team up with former Arsenal teammate Gael Clichy who also joined City this summer. Gael, who has stated he feels like he's been at City for years, will no doubt help his compatriot settle into life in the North West with his new club.

What does Samir bring to City? Pace, creativity and the technical ability to dance through defences with the ball at his feet. It is another sign that the team is being molded into what Mancini envisioned when he took over. City, generally speaking, now have a very strong and robust defence with a more agile and technically adept attack.

Just stop and think for a moment, and you would be hard pushed to find many teams with a creative combination like that of David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Samir Nasri. There certainly isn't one in the Premier League that's for sure.

Pantilimon, I choose you!

Yes his name may make him sound like something from a Japanese children's cartoon, but Costel Pantilimon is the latest signing for City.

Pantilimon - gotta catch 'em all!

The 24 year old 6ft8 Romanian international goalkeeper has been drafted in from Timisoara as backup for Joe Hart since the departure of Shay Given to Aston Villa. A work permit has yet to be granted but the club see no problem in one being granted.

It was reported that both Arsenal and Inter Milan were interested in the giant shot stopper. City fans may remember him from the Europa League ties with Politehnica Timisoara early last season.

He has featured at every age level for the Romanian international side and currently has 13 full international caps since making his debut in 2008. According to certain areas the transfer fee was around £2m, however City have not disclosed the details of the transfer.

City Slickers Seal Sergio's Saughtafter Signature.

Today saw Manchester City finally announce the signing of Sergio 'Kun' Aguero from Atletico Madrid. Although Aguero actually confirmed it himself via Twitter last night that he was "already a City player." The highly rated 23 year old Argentinian forward was one of City's main summer transfer targets with Carlos Tevez desperate to head out of the door.

Initially City were wanting to sell Tevez before signing Aguero but with the transfer to Brazilian side Corinthians falling through and no other offers coming in, City weren't willing to take the chance of someone else signing Kun. The deal is thought to be worth in the region of £38m which will be the highest fee paid for a single player at the club to date.


Aguero, who started his career at Independiente, holds the record for the youngest player to feature in the Argentine First Division, a record previously held by his father in-law Diego Maradona. He also won the Golden Boot (scoring 6 in 7 games) and the Golden Ball in the 2007 U20 World Cup.


Sergio apparently got the nickname Kun from his grandparents who believed he looked like Kum Kum, the Japanese anime character. Personally I think he looks more like the original Karate Kid. Any other shouts?

It was reported that Kun had been speaking to one of his countrymen during the Copa America about life in Manchester before deciding on joining the club. Thankfully it was Pablo Zabaleta and not Carlos Tevez. Zabaleta, unlike Tevez, has embraced life in Manchester since his move from Espanyol and is not only now fluent in English but is also picking up a Mancunian twang to his accent. City fans would hope that Aguero shows the same attitude that has seen Zabman become one of the Manchester City's firm favourites, especially last season (2010-11)

Can you imagine what Tevez would have said to him? "Well Manchester, it only has two restaurants for a start. It rains too often too and there's no beaches. There's nothing to do at all. Oh and don't even bother going to the cinema or even trying to talk to anyone because guess what? They talk English! You don't want to have the bother of learning another language now do you?"

Just how the signing will impact on the Tevez transfer saga is yet to be seen but as it stands now City have Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko, Mario Balotelli, and Carlos Tevez who are likely to play. Adding to this, Emmanuel Adebayor and Craig Bellamy are also still on the wage bill, so City may want to reduce the asking price for those two in order to reduce their outgoings.

It will be interesting to see how Mancini goes about picking who starts as Aguero has recently been keeping Tevez out of and performing better than him in the Argentina squad. Even in the Copa America when Tevez was being chosen ahead of him that appeared to be a mistake as Aguero outperformed him when he came on to the pitch.


The domestic league stats for the two are also very similar for the 2010-11 season.

Of course Sergio is likely to take a bit of time to adjust to a new league and a new team, but the club's record signing certainly possesses all the neccesary attributes to be able to be a big success at Manchester City. He shouldn't have too much trouble settling in, there's plenty of Spanish speaking teammates to get along with while he finds his feet in England.

The signing also seems to have excited laughing boy Micah Richards as he tweeted "Aguero I pray! Tevez Balotelli Dzeko Ouch! City are back"
